Coworking: The Sitcom We Didn't Know We Needed

March 22, 2025

By Todd Nelson, Owner, Venture X Dallas - Braniff Centre

It’s official: coworking and flex space have become our "third space"—the indispensable counterpart to our homes and coffee shops, a critical environment for connection, collaboration, and creativity in today's working world. As the owner of Venture X Dallas - Braniff Centre, I’ve seen firsthand how coworking spaces aren't just offices; they're vibrant communities brimming with dynamic individuals, intriguing backstories, and relationships evolving in real-time.

Considering the cultural significance coworking now holds, I'm somewhat astonished Hollywood hasn’t delivered a sitcom featuring coworking spaces at its core. Yes, we've seen HBO’s dramatization of WeWork’s meteoric rise and fall with WeCrashed, but I'm thinking lighter, funnier, and perhaps, more relatable. Imagine something crafted by the iconic wit of Nora Ephron, showcasing the humor, quirks, and heartwarming human interactions that unfold daily in coworking spaces.

Curiosity got the better of me, prompting me to use an AI tool to sketch out the sitcom we all secretly need. My prompt? "Interesting characters, love interest between members, owner on his third career, and Dallas-focused."

Meet our lead character: Ben, the owner navigating his third career. He's left behind the corporate climb, dabbled unsuccessfully (and comically) in a gourmet food truck adventure, and now, he's found his stride operating a coworking hub in the heart of Dallas. Ben is practical but eternally optimistic, slightly baffled by millennial slang yet completely invested in building a welcoming environment for everyone who walks through his doors.

At the coworking center, we meet Claire, a fiercely independent entrepreneur whose organic skincare brand is poised for greatness—if only she could master social media. Then there’s Raj, the overly caffeinated tech guru launching his fifth "world-changing" app. He's brilliant, relentless, and somehow incapable of reading subtle social cues.

Enter Lena, a savvy real estate consultant with a sharp wit and sharper heels, transitioning from a rigid corporate environment to coworking flexibility. Lena's sophisticated yet down-to-earth personality immediately catches Ben’s eye, sparking a delightful will-they-won’t-they scenario.
Every day at Venture X Dallas - Braniff Centre, these characters encounter drop-ins whose brief visits add comedy and fresh perspectives. Imagine episodes featuring:

  • A flamboyant event planner inadvertently sparking romantic chaos by accidentally mixing up floral deliveries and client love notes.
  • An ex-professional athlete attempting his "comeback" via a dubious motivational podcast, inspiring everyone but somehow getting nothing done himself.
  • A retired NASA engineer whose quiet lunchtime musings casually solve complex business problems for younger entrepreneurs who eagerly gather around his desk.

Dallas itself emerges as a character—vibrant, ambitious, and a little self-conscious about how outsiders perceive it, but undeniably proud of its barbecue and Tex-Mex. Iconic local spots like the Katy Trail, Deep Ellum nightlife, and the legendary State Fair provide backdrops for episodes, effortlessly blending humor with authentic city life.

But at its heart, our sitcom underscores why coworking is indispensable. It's not merely office space; it’s a microcosm of contemporary work-life, balancing independence with community, professionalism with genuine human connections, and stability with delightful unpredictability.

Why hasn’t this sitcom already graced our screens? Perhaps the coworking phenomenon has been quietly evolving under Hollywood’s radar. But as coworking becomes even more woven into the fabric of our professional lives, I believe it’s only a matter of time.

Until then, at Venture X Dallas - Braniff Centre, we continue to live out these delightful stories daily. Our members’ interactions might not have the scripted finesse of an Ephron classic—yet—but the charm, humor, and humanity are already here. Hollywood, when you're ready to cast, we've got the perfect set.
