Coworking offices are an innovative way for growing businesses to establish their presence in a professional setting without the long-term commitment required when buying or leasing an office space. Additionally, coworking spaces are ready to go workspaces with desks, chairs, printers, and ongoing office cleaning services that businesses would otherwise have to arrange for themselves. At Venture X, members benefit from perks such as 24/7 access, free coffee, and super-fast Internet that make it possible to get work done efficiently. Coworking spaces have proven to be beneficial for many industries whether the businesses are startups, freelancers or small- and medium-sized companies. Glen Mair, owner of Mair Law Offices is a member at Venture X Marlborough.
Mair shared, “I was a partner in a large Worcester law firm specializing in real estate and business law for 13 years when I decided to venture out on my own and acquire a couple of small businesses while continuing to practice law for select clients.” After 12 years of small business ownership, he sold the businesses and expanded his law practice. By owning and leasing real estate as well as owning and operating small businesses, Mair explained that he gained experience which helps him provide practical legal advice to small businesses.
He further elaborated, “My current practice focuses on business and contract law, as well as real estate and basic estate planning. I find it very rewarding to provide practical advice and solutions for small businesses at reasonable rates. I can review and negotiate agreements in a timely manner with years of expertise.” For many of his clients, Mair is serving as outside “General Counsel” handling legal issues on an almost daily basis.
We asked Glen some questions to get to know him a little better and learn about the journey he’s been on, career-wise.
What’s the biggest challenge that you have faced in business and how did you overcome it?
After selling my small businesses, I wanted to grow my legal practice by providing general counsel type services to small businesses. Obtaining new clients (especially when they already have counsel) is not an easy task. I picked up a few new clients as referrals from existing clients, I sought out contract drafting and negotiating work through temporary placement (which has resulted in permanent long-time clients) and relocated to Venture X which is a great collaborative business setting.
What business tips would you like to share with others?
Try to formulate a business plan, work every day to execute the plan and remain flexible. The path to the finish line is not usually straight – making adjustments as you seek your goal is critical to your success.
What has been your favorite part about working at Venture X?
I have been at Venture X for almost 6 months. I was one of the first members of the Marlborough location. It is a great working environment. Almost like being in an office with co-workers – but I am not surrounded by attorneys!
What do you do in your spare time?
I play hockey several times a week and I am actively involved in my children’s activities.
