As the county seat of Cameron County, city and county government plays an important role in Brownsville’s economy. The service, trade, and manufacturing industries also contribute to Brownsville’s economy, especially international trade with Mexico. The Port of Brownsville acts as an important hub for South Texas, receiving shipments from other parts of the US, Mexico, and foreign countries. The port also provides a link between nearby Mexico’s road networks and the Texas Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.
Participating in ship recycling, the Port of Brownsville hosts five of the eight ship recycling companies and was granted 1.8 million dollars from the United States Department of Commerce to develop ship-recycling business and infrastructure. Predicted to create 700 new jobs, the grant is also expected to generate 3 million dollars in private investments. Due to its subtropical climate, Brownsville also functions as a hub for the citrus fruit industry. Undergoing a revitalization project in 2016, several historic buildings were restored and The Environmental Protection Agency selected Brownsville for its “Greening America’s Community” program.
Other major industries contributing to Brownsville’s economy include education, aerospace and space transportation. With Elon Musk’s SpaceX South Texas Launch Site gearing up for construction, Brownsville is one of the most pro-business locations in the country.
