February 1, 2024

Welcome to our member spotlight blog, where we shine a light on the members in our community! We are thrilled to introduce Venture X Holyoke Member, Nick Malloy, a dedicated Staff Operational Safety Engineer at Cruise. Cruise is at the forefront of revolutionizing transportation, with a mission to create safer and more accessible transportation for everyone. Dive in to discover Cruise, Nick's journey to success, and the top-notch local eateries he swears by for a delicious meal!

Tell us a little about Cruise.

Cruise operates as a subsidiary of General Motors (GM), aiming to lead the development of self-driving technology. The company focuses on electric, shared mobility solutions, leveraging artificial intelligence and advanced sensor technologies. Cruise has conducted extensive testing and has ambitious plans for the deployment of autonomous vehicles, contributing to the broader transformation of the transportation industry.

What led you to start working with Cruise?

I was drawn to working with Cruise due to my passion for improving the lives of underserved populations in dense urban environments. Recognizing the potential for increased access to mobility in these areas, I believe autonomous vehicles can play a pivotal role. As a systems engineer with expertise in the safety design of complex systems, my commitment to making transportation safer aligns with Cruise's mission. I am particularly motivated by the prospect of
contributing to the development of autonomous vehicles that have the potential to significantly decrease the annual number of automobile-related deaths, which averages around 42,000 per year. Additionally, I thrive on tackling challenging problems, and Cruise provides an exciting platform for such endeavors in the field of autonomous transportation.

What sets Cruise apart from its competitors?

Cruise has been recognized for its focus on electric, shared mobility solutions, emphasis on sustainability, and commitment to transforming the future of transportation. Additionally, Cruise's strategic approach to safety and its extensive testing in complex urban environments have set it apart, demonstrating a commitment to overcoming the unique challenges of autonomous driving in busy city settings.

What is something you wish you’d known when you were just starting your career?

I wish I had known the importance of balancing technical and practical skills. While technical expertise is vital, understanding how to apply that knowledge in practical, real-world situations is equally important. I often wish I had gained more hands-on experience and practical problem-solving skills during my education.

How do you navigate your work-life balance?

I set boundaries and maintain strong lines of communication with my colleagues. As an example, many of my co-workers are on the west coast, which means when I'm grabbing lunch, they're just getting started. Likewise, when my wife and I are getting our two little boys ready for bed, they are trying to squeeze in the last few meetings of the day. We work together to ensure alignment on mutual priorities and objectives, which allows me to do my work and enjoy the things and people I cherish in life.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Knowing that I am contributing to a technology that is truly state-of-the art. My work parallels the efforts of those who were trailblazers in the aviation industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Additionally, I am privileged to collaborate with experts of the highest caliber in the realms of robotics, autonomy, and artificial intelligence.

How has being a part of the Venture X Holyoke community affected you?

I was initially drawn to Venture X as a way to get out of the house after spending 4+ years working from home. Overall, my experience has been amazing. Not to be overly dramatic, but I feel like a real person again. I have my old routine back, and it feels great!

If you had a friend in town and could take them to one of your favorite restaurants or spots in your community, where would you take them?

My wife and I have a few favorites, but I'll share two:

  • Blue Heron in Sunderland: They offer an upscale dining experience with a focus on locally sourced and seasonally inspired cuisine in a charming and rustic setting. The food is outstanding and the staff is top notch. Best of all, they're great with our kids.
  • Daily Operations in Easthampton: They offer a low-key dining experience and a menu of Asian fusion-inspired dishes. Another great spot for the kids. Beware: On the days they're open, it gets busy after 5 PM (especially Thurs-Sat).
